Sidcot and Oakridge - quiet and residential

To the east of the parish, across the busy A38, and lying on the lower slopes of the north face of Callow Hill are Sidcot and Oakridge. They have remained quiet, residential areas.

Sidcot Meeting HouseChristine Gladwin has written: 'The Meeting House is a gathering place not only for Meeting for Worship, but also for talks, concerts and plays. The Winscombe Orchestra puts on three concerts each year and Sidcot School uses the Meeting House on a daily basis for assemblies, plays and musical events. Links between the school and the Meeting are very much encouraged and annual events such as the autumn sale in aid of Quaker Peace and Service are always well attended. Sidcot Friends espouse a variety of causes and participate in study and craft groups, as well as involving themselves in a wealth of other village activities. There are relatively few Quaker Meetings around the country, and people come to worship from quite a distance away. Sidcot Meeting House is a community centre for a wide area, as well as a place for worship.'

Another important part of Sidcot is the school. Sidcot School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school. It caters for pupils from 3 to 18, of all faiths or none. There have been Quaker schools on this site since 1699 and in 1808 the school was re-established by the Religious Society of Friends. The school has seen much development since then. The present range of buildings now includes a drama studio, a sports complex with a twenty-five metre swimming pool, an extensive library and resource centre and a new and separate Junior School.

So, whether you are a resident of Oakridge or Sidcot, a Sidcot scholar or a visitor, this is a delightful part of the parish.
