To reconsider proposals for the siting & installation of a commemoration tablet due to health and safety requirements. The Chairman suspended the meeting at 9.35am to enable a member of the public to speak.

a.       Trips, slips and fall hazards due to the potential slippery surface of polished (or unpolished) granite identified by the committee at their previous meeting were agreed with and it was noted that consideration should be given to authorising works to the surface of the paving stones by the sunshade as future settlement of the tablet and stones may become an issue.

b.       Potential proposals were offered to committee members as detailed below:

v            The tablet could be installed below the central seat in the sunshade.

v            The central seat to the sunshade could have the centre bridged and a memorial tablet placed on top of this.

v            The tablet could be affixed to the existing low wall surrounding the shelter.

v            Raised stonework could be supported by wooden posts.

v            Raised sloping stonework could support the tablet on an incline although the inscription would still be subject to weather conditions.

v            Consideration could be given to the construction of a small wall with a coping stone to the top to protect the granite stone and inscription from some weather damage.

v            It was explained that whilst gold leaf lettering to memorial tablets does wear and could require repainting within a few years, for a longer lasting finish, masonry paint can be applied to the indentation covered by silver paint. Should angulation of the installed tablet be set away from the prevailing wind, the inscription is likely to last longer.

The meeting was reconvened by the Chairman at 9.40am

Committee members present considered options available for the installation of a commemoration stone. Installation of a stone beneath the central seat could be kicked or scuffed by feet of those sitting on the seat. The impact of a stone affixed to the current low cemetery wall could be lost by future additions of memorial tablets to the front of this or by people sitting on the wall. A stone supported by wooden posts will be subject to rot and will require future maintenance.

It was proposed that St Monica Trust be approached to establish the type of stone used for the small wall surrounding the central sunshade and this stone (or similar) be purchased for the erection of a small vertical wall around 2’ in height x 6-8” depth to house the granite tablet with a coping stone to the top to protect the granite. The stone should be set away from the prevailing wind and situated at an agreed location close to the entrance to the extension area, adjacent to the site where a maple tree has been recommended for removal by both a tree surgeon and this committee due to lack of stability following root damage.

Matter for Information – either points of information or subjects for discussion at the next meeting.

·         The water leak reported to the last meeting has been located and fixed by a Bristol Water approved plumber. Future consideration should be given to turning off the water supply to allotment stand-pipes over the winter period due to the likelihood of burst pipes in freezing conditions and the reduced requirement for water at this time of year. The Orderly will still have access to water supplies during this period to ensure that the cemetery water butt has a sufficient supply for users.
